Daughter of the King

Featuring my original character for Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Rori Atlas!

This is my entry for AlexandriteDragonair's Design a YGO Next-Gen OC Contest for the Yu-Gi-Oh--Next-Gen group (alt). It's also my first time drawing in nearly two years I didn't have as much time as I would've liked to work on this since I had to deal with some health issues, but somehow I managed to finish on time!

Update 09/06/2016: The results are in! This entry got first place!

I'm not into shipping fandoms that much, but this was actually really fun to draw. I ended up choosing Jack x Carly because I liked their dynamic when watching 5D's.

Notes:
I chose "Rori" because I wanted a name that could be used in both English and Japanese, like "Jack" and "Carly". It's also a variant of "Rory", which is Irish for "red king", an homage to Jack's title as Duel King and Red Dragon Archfiend. English dubs would probably localize the name to "Lori" because that's more American apparently, lol.

Biography

Rori grew up living within her father's shadow, always having been called "the King's daughter" rather than "Rori". When she was young, she felt that her parents were a bit too overprotective of her (especially Jack, who would sometimes scare away other kids with simply his presence). As she became a teenager, she sought to become more independent and make a name for herself, and thus learned how to ride a D-Wheel and participate in Riding Duels. That said, she is very proud of her family and will challenge anyone who mocks her or her parents. As a reminder of where she comes from, she tends to wear her father's old coat when she duels, as well as a variation of her mother's glasses (which double as goggles during Riding Duels).

Personality

She inherited her mother's curiosity and is always interested in learning new things. This was especially true for the game of Duel Monsters, where she is able to quickly concoct strategies and plays to figure out and exploit an opponent's weaknesses. This trait also extends to social situations, as she can become slightly devious when she learns a new secret[1].

Rori tends to be calm and collected when around others. She doesn't usually express a lot of emotion, choosing to observe rather than to interject. However, there are occasional moments when her cool facade is broken, which usually only happens if she is embarassed from being caught off-guard[2] or very, very annoyed/angry[4] (at which point, the offending parties should run far, far away).

That said, Rori is very serious when it comes to dueling in both regular and Riding Duels[3]. She displays an air of confidence and will never back down from a challenge.

Artist Notes

There were a lot of challenging elements to draw in this piece. I'd say the toughest were
- Face [3]'s high-speed windswept hair from the front view was so tough. Googling for references were nearly impossible, so I hope the idea is conveyed enough.
- The "coat over the shoulders" look was tricky to do in conjunction with her pose. Coloring the inside of the coat wasn't easy either.
- Hair design! Now I know what they mean when they say YGO hair design is crazy.
- Background. Yeah, I just didn't know what to do for this one.
- Hands are always tough to put in perspective.
